The following products are affected - date of purchase before November 17, 2020:
The products have already been removed from the shelves.
Leib und Gut asks all of its customers not to consume these products. A health hazard from consumption cannot be ruled out. Customers who have the products in question at home can bring them back to their point of sale and receive a refund.
How does prohibited ethylene oxide get into organic products?
For some time now, various products from various suppliers with sesame seeds from organic and conventional cultivation in India have had to be withdrawn from the market because they contain residues of ethylene oxide.
The Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office states:
“Ethylene oxide was used for disinfection in sesame seeds from India. The use of ethylene oxide is not permitted in Switzerland or the EU. Residues of ethylene oxide in food can be hazardous to health.”
It must also be mentioned that here ethylene oxide was not used in cultivation, but after the harvest for disinfection (protection against microbiological contamination). The problem only affects sesame seeds from India, which affects all of Europe.
The origin of the sesame is declared on our sesame products. In the meantime, the affected products have already been replaced by products with perfect sesame seeds from other countries (Uganda, Turkey, etc.). These can be consumed without hesitation.
